Monovision LASIK is a form of LASIK that helps patients who find that their vision at various distances is changing, but who wish to avoid the inconvenience of reading glasses. Monovision LASIK corrects each eye differently so as to optimize eyesight for both close-in and distance vision.
More often than not, we all develop some degree of presbyopia as we age. Presbyopia is a degenerative condition in which the lens of one or both eyes loses its flexibility, which makes it more difficult to focus on near objects. This usually manifests itself as difficulty reading, which is why older individuals often require reading glasses or bifocals.
Monovision LASIK can address presbyopia by fine-tuning one eye for distance and the other for reading. Normally, each eye sends a slightly different signal to the brain, which combines the two to form a stereoscopic image. But the brain can be retrained to process the images separately, and some individuals, especially those with strabismus, naturally do this.
In addition to meeting the normal requirements for LASIK, candidates for monovision LASIK also need to be sure that their brains will be able to successfully process the images independently. If you are interested in this procedure, Dr. Walton will have you wear two contact lenses with different corrective properties for a few days. If this trial is successful, then you’ll be considered for a full monovision LASIK evaluation.
