How are Cataracts Diagnosed?

When the natural lens of the eye becomes cloudy, it is considered a cataract. Cataract symptoms generally progress over time, eventually causing the lens to become so cloudy that it interferes with vision. If a cataract is interfering with the activities of everyday life, it may be time to consider cataract surgery.

If you suspect you are developing a cataract, Dr. Chris Walton can perform a diagnosis and set up a personalized treatment plan. Diagnosis of a cataract is performed in our Mobile, Alabama office using tests you have probably experienced before. We will take you through a complete eye examination including:

  • Visual Acuity Test:  During this test, you will be asked to read from an eye chart, one eye at a time. The letters on the chart will get smaller and smaller, to help determine your distance vision.
  • Slit Lamp Examination:  This test uses a special lamp and magnification to allow your eye doctor to view the physical condition and structures of your eyes, including the lens. Another device called and ophthalmoscope may also be used.
  • Retinal Examination:  This test involves special eye drops to dilate your pupils, allowing your eye doctor to get a better look at your retinas, in the back of your eyes. This is just like the slit lamp examination but after the drops have had a chance to take effect.

Dr. Walton can make your cataract diagnosis and help you decide on the best treatment option for your unqiue needs and condition.
