How to Prep for Your Eye Surgery

Mobile, AL eye surgery As a Mobile, Alabama ophthalmologist, Dr. Chris Walton often treats patients in need of corrective eye surgery. While he instructs each patient individually based on their condition and surrounding circumstances, our experienced team has gathered the information you need to know in order to prepare for your eye surgery.

LASIK

One hundred percent of Dr. Walton’s LASIK patients have obtained 20/20 vision, which is well above the national average. To prepare for this procedure, we suggest doing the following:

  • Stop wearing contact lenses: switch to wearing your glasses a few weeks prior to surgery. Contact lenses can distort the shape of your cornea, ultimately leading to a less than optimal outcome.
  • Skip eye makeup: avoid using eye makeup, cream or other substances on the day of and before your surgery. This will reduce your risk of infection.
  • Arrange for a ride home: after surgery you may still feel the effects of the medication given to you for the procedure, and your vision may be too blurry to drive.

Your preparedness for this potentially life-changing eye surgery will ultimately affect the outcome and your results.

Cataract Surgery

Cataracts are one of the most common age-related vision conditions, causing blurry vision. The best ways to be prepared for corrective cataract surgery includes:

  • Stop taking certain medications: Dr. Walton may advise you to temporarily stop taking medications could increase your risk of bleeding.
  • Use eye drops: antibiotic eye drops may also be prescribed to use a couple of days before surgery. This will help fight off potential infections.
  • Fast before surgery: our doctor may instruct you to not eat or drink anything up to 12 hours prior to your procedure.

Anytime you are opting to have surgery, be sure to arrange a ride home and for help around the house for up to a week afterward.
