What Are Cataracts?

Eye Doctor Serving Mobile, Alabama and the nearby Gulf Coast Area

Mobile Cataract SurgeryCataracts affect more than 20 million Americans. Many of our Mobile patients seeking corrective eye procedures, such as cataract surgery, ask: what are cataracts, and what causes them? A cataract forms because of changes in the proteins that make up the lens of the eye.

The lens is a part of your eye that focuses light when it passes through, producing clear, sharp images. When cataracts form, the lens begins to grow "cloudy." This causes light to scatter as it passes through instead of focus, ultimately leaving you with blurry vision.

Cataracts can occur for a variety of different reasons, including:

  • Old age
  • Inherited genetic disorder
  • Medical conditions
  • Trauma
  • Medications

This condition can sometimes develop in one eye, but more commonly appears in both. However, this condition isn't always symmetrical, and can be more advanced in one eye when compared to the other.

Different kinds of cataracts do exist, and may require surgery to correct and help restore your vision. Be sure to speak with our experienced ophthalmologist, Dr. Christopher Walton, to develop a personalized treatment plan.
