LASIK Recovery

About LASIK Recovery

There is a very short recovery period after LASIK laser vision correction. Most patients experience almost no downtime and can resume normal activities later that day. This is one of the many reasons why LASIK has become such a popular procedure.

While the LASIK recovery is relatively minor, it is still important to know what to expect. This page will provide you with a basic overview of the recovery process, but you will receive a much more detailed explanation when you meet with Dr. Chris Walton in person. Please call 251-341-3385 today to schedule a free LASIK consultation at our office in Mobile, Alabama.

What is LASIK Recovery like immediately after the procedure?

It will take a little while for the effects of the valium to fully wear off, so it is important to have a friend or family member drive you home after your LASIK procedure has been completed. Dr. Walton recommends that you rest for the first 3-4 hours of your recovery, but after that you can resume all normal activities.

The anesthetic eye drops will wear off about a half an hour after your procedure has been completed. At this time, you may experience some itching or mild discomfort. However, it's important that you do not rub your eyes. The corneal flap created during your procedure takes time to heal, and rubbing your eyes can potentially result in complications with the healing process.

Dr. Walton will prescribe eye drops for you to take for the first week of your recovery. It's important to take these drops as instructed to keep your eyes properly lubricated and prevent infection.

Long-Term LASIK Recovery

Monovision LASIK

You may experience a few temporary side effects after your LASIK procedure. These are quite common and will subside as your eyes fully heal. The two most common LASIK side effects are:

  • Increase in dry eyes -- this is temporary and will subside in 4-6 weeks
  • Halos at night -- this may occur during the first month of recovery

During your follow-up visits, Dr. Walton will monitor your recovery to make sure your eyes are healing properly. If you experience any additional side effects, alert Dr. Walton at once.

What should I expect from my LASIK results?

You should notice an immediate improvement in your vision. By the next morning, your vision should be 20/20 or better.

Once your eyes have fully healed, you should have great distance vision for the rest of your life. The need for follow-up procedures is less than 1%. Dr. Walton uses the Allegretto Wave laser, the most advanced excimer laser available. This technology has helped Dr. Walton achieve an impeccable success rate -- 100% of his patients experience 20/20 vision or better using the Allegretto Wave laser.
