The short answer is yes, most likely you could get LASIK in the months following your cataract surgery. The catch is, you may not need LASIK after cataract surgery, because the latter often corrects any refractive errors you have anyway. Some people find they still have some vision issues in the months following, and in those situations, Mobile ophthalmologist Dr. Chris Walton can determine if you are a LASIK candidate.
Our staff and eye doctor are always available to provide information and answers. If you have any questions about anything, or if you want to schedule a consultation to discuss your eye health with Dr. Walton, please call our team at 251-341-3385.
Intraocular Lenses can Correct Refractive Errors
During cataract surgery, the clouded natural lens is removed and replaced with a new, artificial eye lens. These are called “intraocular lenses,” or IOLs. Some of these IOLs not only replace the lens, but can also correct astigmatism, nearsightedness or farsightedness.
It is the premium IOLs that can accomplish vision correction. We offer ReSTOR and Toric premium lenses. Once Dr. Walton examines your eyes and reviews your vision prescription, he can determine if one of these premium lenses can offer the dual benefit of cataract reversal and vision correction you are interested in.
If you do opt for a premium lens, Dr. Walton performs these with LenSx laser cataract surgery. Unlike conventional techniques, the LenSx method utilizes state-of-the-art laser technology to improve precision and visual outcomes. You won’t need reading glasses after LenSx and you most likely will not need LASIK either.
Dr. Walton also offers conventional cataract removal and conventional implantable lenses. While this may mean you need reading glasses or LASIK after cataract surgery, the conventional surgery is covered by most insurance policies, which is why some people opt for it instead of laser cataract correction.
So What If I Still Need LASIK?
If for some reason you still feel you can benefit from LASIK surgery after having your cataracts removed, we encourage you to schedule a consultation with Dr. Walton. If you have already undergone cataract surgery, he’ll determine if you are a candidate for laser vision correction and let you know when that will be an option based on how long ago your cataract operation was performed. If you have not yet undergone cataract surgery, Dr. Walton will help you decide the best approach and the best technique in order to get the visual outcomes you want.
